ACDF

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a commonly performed spinal surgery used to treat conditions affecting the cervical spine, particularly when nerve roots or the spinal cord are compressed. The procedure is generally recommended for patients experiencing persistent neck pain, arm pain, numbness, weakness, or other neurological symptoms caused by conditions such as cervical disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, or cervical spinal stenosis.

During ACDF, the surgeon accesses the cervical spine through a small incision at the front of the neck. The damaged or herniated disc is carefully removed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or affected nerve roots. After disc removal, the space is filled with a bone graft or an appropriate spinal implant to restore disc height and promote fusion between the adjacent vertebrae. In some cases, a plate and screws may be used to provide additional stability.

ACDF aims to reduce pain, improve nerve function, restore spinal stability, and prevent further neurological deterioration. Most patients gradually return to their normal activities following recovery, although the timeline varies depending on the individual and the extent of surgery. Proper follow-up, rehabilitation, and adherence to postoperative instructions are important for achieving a successful outcome.
